My new hobbies: learning crochet-1

생름 2023. 2. 14. 17:09

Once my middle school teacher gave the lowest grade to my cross stitch work, (she told me, ”because it was somewhat not neat.”) I decided not to waste time on this tedious shit anymore. Even after I made up my mind in this way, I had a little curiosity about knitting methods around the world beyond cross stitches but ended up failing several trials to learn knitting on my own. My eyes were not meticulous enough to analyze the lumpy knit images in the book and my only two hands couldn't afford to control the yarn with needles. For these reasons, I thought I never had a chance to do such art and crafts in my life.
Recently, however, I started to learn crocheting. Crocheting is a kind of garment manufacturing, similar to knitting in the way of creating endless interlocking loops. Knitting requires two big needles whose length decides the width of the fabric; crocheting is with one small hook whose head diameter is the thickness of the thread. When I grab my hook on the right hand to stab, hook ,twist, and pull the string repetitively, my five fingers on the left side are also busy with their respective roles. Some fingers have to hold the creation; others reel and pull the yarn to deliver in the same tension for cohesive loops. My left index finger should point out to hang yarn and adjust its tension by changing the pointing angle slightly.(The looser the yarn is, the higher my point angle is.) It looks as if a needle of the spinning wheel that poked the Sleeping Beauty. As such, the work by my fingers is pretty mechanical and energy consuming. I expected to watch TV or Youtube while making knots, but it was impossible for me to find the next loop without beholding it yet.
I didn’t know about the existence of crochet on earth until I dropped by a knit shop in the neighborhood, where the owner taught me anything about knit as long as I bought resources from there. There was a clear motivation for why I visited this place. One day, I surfed youtube and watched how knitted concrete acted as a sustainable building material. The presentation was pretty detailed. The speaker explained how she manipulated the crochet machine to make complex geometry shapes. Such as, curvy shapes were done by skipping the number of loops intentionally at the necessary points. It drove me curious, especially how a small hook is available to make such a wide piece.
I came to realize crochet is more interesting than cross stitches in the sense these simple repeating stitches allow me to make any type of shape to realize a double curved surface or any cloth types to make even an alternative paper. There is seldom a limit. This is a new type of freedom I just discovered. I believe it acts as a survival skill that is probably useful on the uninhabited island.
